Archivist's note

Similar organizational schemas are used throughout case file types. Civil and Criminal cases shared the same numbering system (interfiled) until at least 1929. Later files, including family and civil cases have some crossover until county courts merged with Circuit Courts in 1978 and the file naming conventions were changed to reflect yycasefiletype######. For example, 78FA10 (or 78FA000010) would be the 10th family case filed in 1978 with the circuit court. Some folders are labeled County Court, or have materials labeled County court therein - this is because there were transference of some records to Circuit Court after the '78 merger. You will also note that there are few family court cases prior to the 1970s; this is because prior to that time, many of these family court cases (namely divorces) would have been referred to County Courts; however, that is not always the case.
Appears to be some discrepancies beginning around case files 641 or so - perhaps may be the result of retroactively numbering previously unnumbered (and earlier) case files? Perhaps different circuit court judges/clerks had things stored differently/numbered differently. If you don't have a case file number and are looking for cases circa 1850-1865, you may need to check case files numbered 650-1036, in addition to those numbered 1-500.
