George Field President/Chancellor, 1968-1985. George R. Field was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, in 1929. He completed a bachelor’s degree in geography from Carleton College, a master’s in educational administration from the University of Colorado, and a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. From 1951-1953, he served in the U.S. Army. Field taught junior high and served as a school principal before entering higher education administration at the University of Wisconsin. He served in many capacities, the last His last position there was Vice President for University Development and State Relations for the state university system.
