John Patrick George Shepherd was born in England on May 11, 1937. He attended Imperial College in London, later earning a PhD in physics. He was a postdoc and eventually an assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Shepherd worked as a physicist at the Royal Radar Establishment in Malvern before emigrating with his family to the US and settling in River Falls. From 1971 to 2000, Dr. Shepherd taught physics and astronomy at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. In addition to his teaching, he was responsible for developing the department’s advanced physics laboratory. Dr, Shepherd designed the Swensen Sundial sculpture located on the Kleinpell Fine Arts building on the UWRF campus. The John and Beverly Shepherd Scholarship fund for physics majors has been set up at UWRF.
